book review: GLASS SWORD by VICTORIA AVEYARD
("red queen" #2)
*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*
SYNOPSIS: If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.
Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.
The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.
Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.
But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.
Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?
WHY DID I DECIDE TO READ IT?
I had read the first book of this trilogy a long time ago now, so I didn't remember it well in detail; but when I saw "Glass Sword", I decided to read it, even though I didn't remember much about what the whole thing was about. I loved its cover, as much as I'd loved the one in the previous book and it seemed to have great critics on its back cover.
At first I decided to read it immediately, but it turned out I didn't understand most of what was going on as I didn't remember what had happened in the previous book. So I read again "Red Queen" and, wow, I loved it. I told my friend that I was reading it again and that I was lovin' it and she told me: "Really? That's weird! When I first asked you about it you told me you didn't like it and that it wasn't worth it." Really? How very wrong I was! I loved "Red Queen" and I loved even more the second book of the trilogy!
WRITING STYLE
The characters are definitely my favorite part of this whole thing, but I guess that's due to the author. The character of this trilogy are unique, just unique. The world created in this story is reflected in them at every moment, full of treason and injustice. Victoria Aveyard builds her characters in an excellent way, truly deep and real for the reader. Every character gets to you! Whether its love or hate you feel for them, it gets to you. Victoria Aveyard knows the exact way to get to her readers. She takes you INTO that scary world that you'll end up loving and wishing to never leave. She's a wonderful writer! Maybe she's not full of metaphors (although she has some that are pretty amaziiing!) but she has a different kind of talent. A talent that gets to us, the readers. You can see her passion in each of her words. It's amazing.
THE PROTAGONIST
I'd never thought so much about a protagonist. Yeah, Katniss Everdeen is amazing, Hermione Granger is great and Aelin Galathinius is freakingly awesome, but Mare Barrow has left me speechless. She's a deep and well-constructed character as many others. So, why do I like her so much? I think it is because I had never read about a character like Mare Barrow before. So perfect. And when I ssay "perfect", I mean: "Look at how many flaws she has, at how many mistakes she makes!" I actually mean: "Thank you for being so imperfect." Because the words "real" and perfect" here actually mean "human". "Thank God you're so human, so perfectly human as you make mistakes and is wrong from time to time." perfecto. Y, cuando digo perfecto, en realidad me refiero a: ""
Many characters in other books make mistakes as well. Mistakes that are only considered mistakes in the story. It's planned that way. They catalogue something as a huge mistake and it turns out to actually be the best decition ever taken in the book. It's meant to be that way, for you to believe it's actually a mistake when it's not. But you actually know it's not, so it's no really even exciting.
But this book is different. Mare Barrow has done so many things wrong that I, as a reader, already knew they were mistakes to make but she did them anyway, and I had to see her suffer the consequences.
Mare Barrow is an extremely deep character and I love her for that. Victoria Aveyard didn't care her character made so many mistakes. She didn't turn Mare into the kind of character she wanted her to be, but she let her be and make as many human mistakes as she wanted to. And that was wonderful.
CONCLUSION
"Glass Sword" by Victoria Aveyard is the second book of the "Red Queen" trilogy; a fascinating trilogy full of passion, mystery, romance, action and suspense.
